The framework

One model. Four perspectives. Look at the same work through each lens to understand the qualities that shape it.

Read the model

The ACID Method framework Abstraction upper left, Creativity upper right, Intention lower left, and Depth lower right. Outside is at the top, Inside at the bottom. Constructive and Cold are on the left; Creative and Warm on the right.
The original framework by Design On Acid. The labels describe relationships between the four lenses.

The upper half faces Outside: perception and expression. The lower half faces Inside: organization and emotional connection. The left pairs Constructive / Cold; the right pairs Creative / Warm.

These are directions for reading the model. A position on the diagram does not make a quality better or worse.

A · Abstraction

Air · Perception & cognition · Analyse, quantify

What does it mean, and how do we understand it?

Step back and examine the ideas. Look for meaning, patterns, clarity, evidence, and assumptions. Ask what the audience needs to understand and whether the work makes that understanding possible.

A clear proposition, a useful explanation, or a well-framed problem can all bring Abstraction into focus.

C · Creativity

Fire · Expression & transformation · Disrupt, create

What does it express, challenge, or transform?

Look at the choices that give an idea its form. Explore reframing, surprise, imagination, and the conventions being used or challenged. Consider what the expression adds to the idea.

A familiar subject seen from a different angle can carry more creative force than novelty for its own sake.

I · Intention

Earth · Organization & operation · Organize, stabilize

How do the choices serve the purpose?

Follow the structure and the way things work. Examine hierarchy, coherence, practical execution, and the path from an idea to an outcome. Notice whether the work helps people do what they came to do.

A clear next step, a dependable service, or a coherent design system can make Intention visible.

D · Depth

Water · Emotion & connection · Experience, empathise

How does it make room for human experience?

Examine emotional framing, empathy, storytelling, nuance, and belonging. Look at whose experience is represented, how people are addressed, and what makes the work personally meaningful.

You can assess these qualities in the work itself. Audience feedback can then help establish how that intended connection is actually experienced.

Find the relationships

The lenses become useful together. Clear meaning can give a bold expression direction. A thoughtful structure can make an emotional experience accessible. A personal story can give a practical service a reason to matter.

Ask which qualities lead, which reinforce them, and where a tension helps or gets in the way. Then turn those observations into an analysis.
